Karen Butterfield is the founder and Creative Director of Bilton Butterfield Interior Design, a globally inspired design practice now based in the Caribbean. Her work is defined by a calm elegance and a love of texture and detail, influenced by her experience across the UK, Dubai, and the Caribbean.

Having lived and worked across multiple continents including Australia, Indonesia, Africa, the UAE, and the Caribbean, Karen brings a uniquely informed perspective to her work. This global experience, combined with extensive travel, has shaped her instinctive understanding of how spaces should feel, function, and be experienced.

With a career spanning over two decades, Karen combines interior design expertise with over 15 years of project management experience, delivering both residential interiors and hospitality-focused projects.

Alongside her interior design work, Karen specialises in villa audits — a design-led service that assesses how a property looks, feels, and performs from a guest perspective. This allows property owners to identify opportunities to enhance presentation, improve guest experience, and maximise rental potential.

Before establishing her studio, Karen spent the first decade of her career in the fashion industry, where her love of fabrics, colour, and detail began. This foundation continues to influence her interiors today.

She later formalised her creative career, achieving a First-Class Honours Degree in Interior Design, and went on to teach interior design at The National Design Academy in Dubai, supporting and mentoring students from around the world.

Karen is a member of the British Institute of Interior Design and serves on the Professional Practice Committee, contributing to the development of professional standards within the industry.

Her work has been featured in Better Homes magazine, and her projects span private residences, villa styling, and hospitality-focused design — all unified by a signature sense of comfort, balance, and authenticity.
